Common sense tells us that the following must be of importance when
establishing what constitutes the best way to invest in or own silver ingots (silver bars):
Find a reliable silver ingot dealer: It’s
important to buy from a silver ingot dealer
(silver art bar dealer)
who can be trusted and who is knowledgeable, not only in terms of knowing the silver ingots (silver bars) that are available for
sale, but also in terms of knowing the best ways to get the relevant silver ingots (silver bars) to you the
buyer once purchased.
E.g. any experienced silver investor in South Africa will tell you
that it’s best to buy or order silver ingots from overseas. The reason for this is twofold: Firstly, there is at
best a limited variety of silver ingots available in South Africa. Secondly, when available in South Africa, silver
ingots are normally sold at ridiculous premiums to the melt value of silver, which is not ideal for
the silver investor. In fact, the moment you as a silver investor have to pay a substantial premium on the melt
value of the silver for collector’s value, it’s best to walk away.
Collector’s value can add a nice “double play” to an investment in physical silver, but not when it comes at a
ridiculous high premium where the silver price has to increase tenfold or more just to
break even. Ok, so when you buy silver ingots from overseas it’s important that the silver dealer/seller knows
how to send or mail the silver ingots in order for it to get safely to you in South Africa. If he/she doesn’t
know, then it’s best not to order or buy silver ingots from that specific source. Finding reliable or honest
silver dealers is of critical importance to the successful silver investor. You will find more details here.

In our experience it’s difficult at best to obtain info from the
Customs and Excise division of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in regards to bringing gold and silver into South Africa. The members of staff who
are able to assist, are always in meetings or just not available, and it always come with the promise of a call
that will be returned which never or seldomly happens. They simply love to send one from pillar to post. In
fact, to be brutally honest, either they just don’t give a shit, don’t want the South African investor to bring
gold and silver into the country or they simply don’t have the expertise to deal with such matters. Needless to
say, we advise the South African silver investor to stick to a silver investment strategy which leaves SA
Customs and Excise out of the equitation as far as possible.
