It might come as a surprise, but in a modern sense the term
“silverware” can refer to household items such as
flatware and cutlery that contains no silver whatsoever. However, the term was
historically exclusively used to refer to household items that were indeed made of silver. We at Silver
Bullion prefer to stick to the old definition of the term since we’re only interested in items
that do contain a substantial percentage of silver. In fact, except where we specifically mention otherwise,
when we refer to “silverware” or “tableware” here at the Silver
Bullion website, it’s always in reference to household silver such as silver dishware (crockery), silver cutlery and silver drinkware
(silver drinking vessels)
that are:
-
Non-plated: Non-plated here refers to silverware
(tableware) that doesn’t consist of silver plate as created in the Sheffield plating process where
copper and silver are used in a layered combination. This includes modern day electroplating processes
where a base metal such as copper, nickel or zinc are plated or coated with a thin layer of pure silver
by means of electrolysis. In fact, we are only interested in silverware (tableware) that is made of
either sterling silver or coin silver.
-
Collector’s value: Silverware (tableware) that
might or might not have collector’s value attached to it such
as antique silverware (tableware).
-
Non-filled: Non-filled here refers to silverware
(tableware) that doesn’t consist of non-precious metal fillers such stainless steel, concrete, wax and
plaster, which in some instances are used to add strength to silverware (tableware).
