Silver Bullion - Traditional Uses of
Silver
The traditional uses of silver, physical silver that is, are listed
here:
- Coinage and Currency
Silver has been used as a medium of exchange since earliest recorded history. Silver coins were produced by the Lydians round about 700 B.C. The Lydians were citizens of an Iron Age kingdom of western Asia Minor located in the modern day Turkish provinces of inland Izmir and Manisa.
- Photography
Silver-based photography is based on light striking sensitive silver-halide crystals suspended on a film. Through use of chemical ‘developers’ the differences in light intensity form negative images which can then be processed into paper pictures by using silver-imbedded paper. Approximately 5,000 color photographs can be taken using one ounce of silver.
- Silver Jewelry
Silver jewelry is highly prized for its brilliant luster and its ease of fabrication, properties that it shares with gold, a precious metal also used extensively in jewelry.
- Silverware and Table Settings
The same properties that make silver ideal for jewelry also cross over into silverware – its reflective brilliance, beauty and tarnish resistance. Copper is mixed with silver to toughen it for use as cutlery, bowls and decorative items such as picture frames.
