The Sheldon rarity scale or commonly referred to as “the Sheldon scale” was developed in 1958 by a gentleman with the name of William Herbert Sheldon. It consists of no less than 8 levels where each level is prefaced with the letter “R”, which stands for rarity. The Sheldon scale can be used to define the rarity of any coin, although William had developed it to aid him in his study of one cent coins.
